Congratulations to Rock Star on beating out 17 professional sailfishing teams to clench the title of Sailfish Pro Series Champions during the inaugural 2008-2009 season.  Owned by Jorge Piedra, lead by Captain Scott Leon with Ovi Vento, Rudy Espinosa, Henry Jimenez, Joe Turner Greg Braswell, Rudy Espinosa, Jr., and Jorge Piedra, Jr., Rock Star released 13 sailfish during the final day match up to secure their win.

The final day of competition proved how closely matched Rock Star, Jichi and Advanced Roofing truly were.  The lead changed with almost every release as the day began, until Advanced Roofing pulled ahead just before 10am with a double hook-up.  The lead was short lived as Jichi quickly tied it up and Rock Star closed the gap to take the lead with seven releases by noon.  Advanced Roofing jumped out in front just after 2pm only to be upset by Rock Star’s triple hook up followed by a double just before lines out at 4pm.  If Jichi had been able to release all of their 3:45pm triple hook up, they would have taken first but the loss of those two sails slipped them into second.

Jichi, with owner Luis Isaias, Captain Ricky Linder, Anibal Moya, Ricky Querejeta, Jimmy David, Albert Castro, Neil Orange, Sr., and Ernie Portuondo, and Advanced Roofing, owned by Michael Kornahrens, Captained by Jeff Scott and crewed by Robbie Clawges, Robbie Wsddick, Michale Calabrese, Chris Czipulis and Mike Zislin, battled it out for second and third place.  The triple hook up just before lines out at 4pm for Jichi with the release of only one of three sails decided their fate.  The day ended with Jichi releasing 11 sails securing a second place finish and Advanced Roofing only one release behind with 10 for third place.

The Sailfish Pro Series began in November with 18 teams in a season-long NASCAR style point race culminating in this weekend’s post-season finale.  The five regular season tournaments, Sailfish Cup, Palm Beach Shootout, Ft. Lauderdale Billfish, Sailfish Open and World Sailfish Championship, qualified Rock Star, Advanced Roofing, Jichi, Weez in the Keys, Hostile and wild card winner Cracker to advance into the post-season head to head match up which culminated Sunday with the final fish-off between the top three teams.

The Sailfish Pro Series teams have won over $1,865,000 in prize money through out the season and taken the top positions in every tournament during the regular season.

In addition to the title of Best of the Best, Rock Star will take home a Fred Curtis original crystal trophy and $100,000.  Jichi and Advanced Roofing will receive trophies specially designed by Fine Awards as well at $30,000 and $20,000 in prize money respectively.
