January 19, 2008 – Freeport, Bahamas - The second leg of the Bahamas Wahoo Challenge was exactly that: a challenge.  The great people at NOAA predicted 25-30 knot winds for the general area and many teams actually listened to the report.  These people have not learned that the NOAA offices do not have windows, but that’s another story.  Many teams called to express their concern and cancelled due to weather, but other teams decided to make the crossing.  By the time the captains’ party rolled around, there were only four teams ready to compete.  The weather never became a factor.

The second leg was hosted at Sunrise Resort in Freeport.  The resort was a clean, affordable and well-managed.  And the on-site fuel docks made things easy all weekend.  The staff was great and catered to our needs… not that there were many with only four boats.  You get the picture.

The first day of fishing saw some nice fish hit the scales.  Most notable was “Ocean Alley’s” 57-pound wahoo, newcomers “Airborne’s” 48-pound dolphin, and “HeaVEEweight’s” 33-pound wahoo. The 33-pounder was notable not because of its size, but because the crew actually caught a wahoo; three wahoo to be exact.  By the end of day one, “Ocean Alley” was in the lead with 164 pounds.

The second day was another beautiful day. The winds never went above 15 knots all weekend. Teams were able to run to the limits of the boundaries.  “Ocean Alley” had another nice day improving their overall weight by three pounds.  The crew on “Liborio” arrived at the scales a little early.  This is always a good sign.  When they opened their fishbox and revealed their haul, everyone knew it was going to be a close call on the overall contest.  “Liborio” pulled out a nice 63-pound ‘hoo. When the calculations were complete, “Ocean Alley” edged out “Liborio” by only .25 pounds!  This was the closest finish to date.

The awards dinner was great as the resort really put out a spread.  But the famous after party was even better.  All the teams headed out to the casino to spend their winnings.  Some teams hit the blackjack tables and others the roulette wheels.  A couple of the “Liborio” crew and tournament director Tony Albelo took over a craps table and almost got thrown out twice.  In the end most won some money and all had a great time.
All the teams are looking forward to the third and final leg in Bimini this February.  For more information on the series check out www.WahooChallenge.com.
